Merchant Vessel Operations
Level 4

This SVQ is based on standards developed by the Merchant Navy Training Board NTO. The Merchant Navy Training Board NTO represent a wide variety of people working in a broad range of occupations within navigation, communication and service operations on board merchant ships.The standards for this SVQ can be obtained from the Scottish Qualifications Authority on 0141-248 8529.
 
Structure of the SVQ
The way the SVQ is made up is shown below. The unit title appears in bold and the elements that make up each unit are listed under the unit title.
Mandatory units
Candidates must complete all of these units:
AXP9 04
Take Charge of a Survival Craft and Small Boats (includes CPSC)
1 Take charge of a survival craft during abandonment
2 Manoeuvre small boats for specific operations
 
AY07 04
Apply Emergency Procedures on Board Ship
1 Respond to an emergency on board ship
2 Fight fires on board ship
3 Apply search and rescue procedure during an emergency
4 Survive at sea in the event of abandonment
5 Apply immediate effective first aid action on board ship
 
AY00 04
Monitor and Control the Vessel During Navigation
1 Maintain navigational folios and related documentation
2 Monitor and progress the navigation of the vessel underway and at anchor
3 Fix the vessel's position when underway and at anchor
4 Adjust the vessel's course and speed to maintain the safety of navigation
5 Manoeuvre the vessel during passage
 
AY01 04
Initiate Response to Navigation Emergencies
1 Respond to the malfunction of v/l systems affecting navigation
2 Provide a navigational response to emergencies to the vessel
3 Respond to a distress signal at sea
 
AY05 04
Operate Communication Equipment (GMDSS)
